How much do classes cost, and what does that cost cover?$20 per person per lesson. Testing, uniforms (gi), belts, and/or personal sparring equipment are extra.

Isn't karate just about learning how to beat people up?No. True Martial Arts teach discipline, self-control, and confidence. It is never about beating someone up.

May I (or my child) observe a class before joining?Yes.

How can I stay up-to-date on changes to the schedule?Once you are enrolled, members (or their parents) may ask to join our Telegram Community. Updates will also be sent out over group text and emails. We will also keep an up-to-date schedule on our Classes page calendar.

Where can I get a gi (uniform)?You are free to get a uniform anywhere you like as long as it is either a black or white traditional karate gi with no patches or embellishments. You can also Order Uniforms Here. Use the code DeerDojo (yes, "DeerDojo" <- this is our parent school) to get 30% off.

How long does it take to get a black belt?This depends on the student. Bear Dojo maintains a minimum timeline between belts, but in the end, the student will move at the pace that benefits them the most.

Do I have to be athletic/strong/flexible for this?Absolutely not. You DON’T have to be great to start. But you have to START to be great.

What tournaments does Bear Dojo compete in?Bear Dojo and the Kojosho system does not require any kind of tournaments or competitions for progress in our curriculum. Instead, we work on deeper understanding of the forms and techniques through multiple camps. Every year there is a Spring Camp on Memorial Day weekend in Albuquerque (our system headquarters), and a Fall Camp at the end of October in La Junta (our parent school).

Where can I buy sparring (kumite) equipment?Kumite is not a core component of the Bear Dojo curriculum for lower belt ranks, but as students progress into the higher ranks, kumite may be an occasional activity.
